Support of the Natural Family
Ensuring favorable conditions for the life of the family, its economic, reproductive, educational functions, strengthening the moral foundations of the family and increasing its prestige in society is a priority of social and demographic policy of Belarus.
At the global level, there is an active debate about the place and role of the family in society, its forms and relationships between its members. Participating in this debate, Belarus consistently stands up for the values of the natural family and actively cooperates with international partners to reflect this issue in UN documents.
In February 2015 Belarus, Qatar and Egypt created a Group of Friends of the Family in New York, uniting 25 UN Member States from all regions of the world (Bangladesh, Belarus, the Comoros, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Libya, Malaysia, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, the Sudan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Yemen, Zimbabwe).
In 2023-2024, Cameroon, Djibouti, The Gambia, Syria, Sri Lanka and Türkiye joined the Group of Friends of the Family. Today the Group consists of 31 Member States.
The Group of Friends of the Family promotes the global implementation of strategies, plans and measures that benefit the natural family and consistently upholds traditional family values in accordance with the definition of the family as reflected in intergovernmentally agreed documents.
The Republic of Belarus as an active participant of the Group of Friends of the Family advocates the need to preserve the model of the natural family and to popularize family values in today’s world, and emphasizes the enduring importance of the natural family for sustainable social and economic development of human society.
Our country actively cooperates with international and national public organizations that promote concepts in support of the family and traditional family values.
International Day of Families has been proclaimed by UN General Assembly resolution 47/237 and has been celebrated every year on 15 May since 1994.
