Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Y.Ambrazevich takes part in the 77th session of the UN General Assembly

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Yuri Ambrazevich visited the UN Headquarters in New York to participate in a number of thematic events and to hold meetings with the UN leadership.

On December 6, 2022 within the consideration by the UNGA of the agenda item 69 “Strengthening of the coordination in the field of humanitarian and disaster relief assistance provided by the UN, including special economic assistance”, the Deputy Foreign Minister delivered a national statement in which presented the position of Belarus on the provision of humanitarian assistance, including in the context of international Chernobyl cooperation.

The Deputy Minister noted that for decades international solidarity around Chernobyl has brought together governments and ordinary people from Belarus and many foreign countries, has become the best example of public diplomacy and depoliticized international cooperation.

Yuri Ambrazevich also took part in the forum “Prospects for the next review cycle of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons” organized by the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan to the UN with the support of the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs.

In his speech, the diplomat noted that, despite the current disagreements and approaches to issues on the international agenda, “we can all agree that the NPT is a key element not only of the global nonproliferation regime, but of the entire international security system.”

On December 7, 2022 Deputy Foreign Minister took part in a round table organized at the United Nations by the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of the Philippines on the topic “Social and legal problems fueling trafficking in women and children”.

Among the participants of the event were representatives of UN Member States from all regions of the world, including members of the Belarus-led UN Group of Friends United against Human Trafficking, as well as a wide range of representatives from academia, international and non-governmental organizations.

The speakers noted the important contribution of Belarus to strengthening the coordination of international efforts to combat human trafficking, as well as pointed out a number of practical problems and proposed their solutions for a more effective joint fight against this criminal practice.

On December 9, 2022 Yuri Ambrazevich met with the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres. The issues of international and regional security, the negative impact of unilateral sanctions on global food security were discussed.

During his visit Deputy Foreign Minister also met with the President of the UN General Assembly Csaba Kőrösi, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, the Under-Secretary-General, High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN Under-Secretary-General, Head of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism Vladimir Voronkov, the Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Karina Hülshof, the Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Population and Development Fund (UNFPA), Yib Petersen.

Yuri Ambrazevich held briefings in front of the representatives of the member states of the Non-Aligned Movement and the countries participating in the Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter.

The international partners were informed about the illegality of the economic sanctions imposed by Western countries against our country, about their damaging impact on global and regional trade, food and aviation security and the system of multilateral diplomacy as a whole.
