Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN V.Rybakov participates at the opening ceremony of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Valentin Rybakov in his capacity as Vice-President of ECOSOC took part in the opening ceremony of the 18th session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, which takes place at the UN headquarters from 22 April to 3 May.

The Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is a subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) that deals with indigenous issues relating to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights. The main theme of the current session of the Forum is “Traditional knowledge: generation, transmission and protection”. In accordance with the UN General Assembly resolution 71/178 the year 2019 was proclaimed as the International Year of Indigenous Languages.

In his statement the Belarusian diplomat noted the role and importance of traditional knowledge of indigenous peoples in achieving internationally recognized sustainable development goals, as well as the importance of supporting and preserving the languages of the indigenous peoples of the world.
