16.11.2018

A meeting of the UN General Assembly devoted to the revitalisation of its work was held on November 15 at the UN Headquarters in New York.

To improve the work of the General Assembly, more than 10 years ago a special Ad Hoc Working Group was established. Thereafter it works on the annual basis. At the current session of the General Assembly, the Ad Hoc Working Group intends to consider the issues of strengthening of the role and authority of the General Assembly, its methods of work, selection and appointment of the Secretary-General and other heads of UN system, dates for the beginning of the session of the General Assembly, as well as of conduct of election campaigns in the Organisation. Traditionally, the Belarusian Delegation is one of the most active participants in the process of revitalisation of the UN GA.

During the discussion on this agenda item, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Valentin Rybakov made a statement.

In his statement (in Russian), Belarusian diplomat focused on the long overdue need to optimize the General Assembly’s agenda, suggested using a more balanced approach when setting up a schedule of events during its high-level segment, expressed the hope that the new co-chairs of the Ad Hoc Working Group would use the toolkit of informal dialogues between the Missions of Member States and the UN Secretariat, and also urged to eradicate the practice of financing certain key areas of the Organisation’s activities through voluntary contributions.

The Ad Hoc Working Group on the revitalisation of the UN GA will begin its direct work in February 2019 and will conclude it not later than mid-September 2019.
