Permanent Representative of Belarus V.Rybakov made a statement in UN GA on the Report of the IAEA

On November 11, 2019, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations Valentin Rybakov addressed the plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly on the Report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In his statement, the head of the Belarusian mission expressed support for the work of the IAEA in all areas of the Agency’s activities, emphasizing its key role in the development and promotion of international nuclear safety standards.

V.Rybakov noted that today many states, including Belarus, are considering the possibility of using nuclear technology to ensure their energy security. He informed that the implementation of the national nuclear energy programme will allow Belarus to provide a third part of needs for affordable and reliable energy, significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This programme has already given impetus to the development of related industries and productions and scientific knowledge.

The Belarusian diplomat emphasized the importance of the Agency’s technical cooperation mechanisms and the need to continue its respective programmes. He noted that IAEA technical cooperation projects for Belarus help the country to develop human resources for nuclear-energy industry, to ensure the highest possible level of nuclear and radiation safety, to contribute to the development of nuclear medicine, and also to help address challenges of promoting a sustainable development of areas affected by the Chernobyl disaster.
