Belarusian delegation participates in the session of the UN Women Executive Board

The delegation of Belarus participates in the first 2018 regular session of the UN Women Executive Board that opened on February 13 at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Background: The UN Women is a leading body coordinating the work of the UN system in the sphere of gender equality. The structure was established in 2010 in order to accelerate progress in meeting the needs of women around the world, to increase efficiency of available resources and to integrate the mandates and functions of UN entities and divisions that worked for gender equality and the empowerment of women. The UN Women Executive Board is a governing body of the UN Women providing intergovernmental support to it and supervision of its operational activities. Belarus has been a member of the Executive Board since February 2017.

In her statement Deputy Permanent Representative Irina Velichko informed participants about significant  progress made by Belarus to promote gender equality as an essential element in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.

I.Velichko noted, that according to the Global Report of the World Economic Forum on Gender Equality on the Gender Gap 2017, Belarus ranks 26th in the world, fifth in ensuring equality in the economy and the first in this area among the countries in Eastern Europe.

The Belarusian diplomat urged UN Women to assist States in compiling qualitative statistical gender-disaggregated data, which is one of the main tools in promoting gender equality, including in the context of the implementation of Sustainable Development Agenda 2030.
