Participation of the delegation of Belarus in UNICEF Executive Board session

08.02.2017

The delegation of Belarus takes part in a session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which takes place this week at the UN headquarters in New York.

UNICEF, the oldest organization among UN operational agencies, celebrated its 70th anniversary in December 2016. In this regard, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations Irina Velichko congratulated the Fund on the anniversary and wished success in its work and noted that the valuable experience and selfless work of UNICEF should become a model for other younger UN operational agencies.

Irina Velichko, who is also a vice-president of the Bureau of the UNICEF Executive Board, appreciated the cooperation between Belarus and UNICEF Office in Belarus. As the Deputy Permanent Representative noted, the Fund had been a reliable partner of Belarus in the implementation of national priorities in protecting rights of children for thirty years.

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Belarus also participated in the discussion on the preparation of a new UNICEF strategic plan for 2018-2021 during the meeting.

Irina Velichko noted that it was crucial for Belarus that international assistance for development was provided in accordance with national needs and priorities of developing countries, including middle-income countries, to which Belarus belonged.

The Deputy Permanent Representative also expressed the hope that protection of a family would be properly reflected in a new strategic plan, as it was a family that created a protective shield against external threats to a child, created an atmosphere of love and understanding which fully coincided with the UNICEF’s mandate of creating a safe environment for children.
