22.04.2017

The 5th Conference of universities that signed memoranda of understanding with the UN on cooperation in the training of professional linguists for working in the UN system took place at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The network of universities that signed memoranda of understanding with the UN Secretariat came into being in 2007 with the purpose of seeking and training the best talent for work in the UN Secretariat translation services. Currently, 23 best language universities in the world participate in the network as its members. Minsk State Linguistic University of Belarus is a part of this network and it is represented at the conference by Mr Alexander Ponimatko, Dean of the School of Translation and Interpreting.

Andrei Dapkunas, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations, took part as a special guest in a panel discussion “International Organisations and Academia, Partners in Sustaining Multilingualism in the Service of Peace, Development and Human Rights” that was held within the framework of the conference.

The head of the Belarusian Mission to the United Nations noted (statement, in Russian) that Belarus consistently upholds the principles of multilingualism in the organisation and undertakes practical steps both to strictly ensure the principle of equality of official languages within the UN system, as well as to honour the role of professional translation, and professional linguists in general, in strengthening peace, promoting better understanding between the countries of the world and sustainable development.
