Belarus participates in the thematic discussion of Operational Activities for Development Segment of ECOSOC session of 2018

28.02.2018

Operational Activities for Development Segment (OAS) of the substantive session of the Economic and Social Council was launched at the UN Headquarters.

According to the General Assembly resolution 68/1 OAS provides overall coordination and guidance for operational development funds and programmes. Such guidance includes determination of objectives, priorities and strategies in the implementation of the policies formulated by the General Assembly, including the quadrennial comprehensive policy review.

During the thematic discussion on the reorganization of the UN development system, Deputy Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Irina Velichko noted value of a coordinated system of resident coordinators as a backbone for the entire UN development system. Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Belarus advocated preservation of the idea that the UN development system should be based on special needs of recipient countries and be aligned with national development priorities.

I. Velichko stressed that the decision to determine composition and physical presence of the UN country team should be made in open discussions between the host government and the development system.

The Belarusian diplomat informed about Belarus’ attitude towards the renewed resident coordinators system, including assistance to Member-States in solving priority tasks for implementing sustainable development goals.

OAS of ECOSOC will last until March 1, 2018.
