Member States held an interactive dialogue with the High Commissioner for Human Rights as part of the work of the Third Committee of the 72th session of the UN General Assembly.

Deputy Director of Global Policy and Humanitarian Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Andrei Taranda underlined the important role of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in technical cooperation for strengthening national capacity. He informed about the results of the OHCHR technical mission's visit to Belarus. He noted with satisfaction long lasting and fruitful cooperation between Belarus and the OHCHR in the field of combating trafficking in persons and expressed hope for expansion of such cooperation in other areas of human rights issues (statement in Russian).

Belarusian diplomat called for the OHCHR to expand project activities to provide international technical assistance for the implementation of the first national plan for human rights in Belarus.

A. Taranda noted that the monitoring function of the OHCHR would have a practical effect in case it was impartial and non-political. In this context, he called to rely to a large extent on the work of such mechanisms as thematic special procedures, Human Rights treaty bodies and Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review.
