About the statement by Minister at the General Debate of the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly

On the  first day of his visit to the UN Headquarters in New York Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus V.Makei made a statement at the General Debate of the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly.

The Head of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs outlined main prerequisites for the international community to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. Among them V.Makei underlined the role of the United Nations as a multilateral mechanism, as well as the need for creation of effective “UN country teams”, which can furnish governments on their path to sustainable development with result-oriented and rational support.

The Minister stated that further of globalization which should meet the everyone’s needs remains a fundamental contemporary task. In this regard V.Makei spoke for the need to build a fair, predictable and non-discriminatory trade and economic architecture. According to the Head of the Belarusian MFA implementation of  multi-tier integration projects should become an integral part of this architecture.

In order to successfully implement the Agenda-2030 Minister called for the international assistance to middle income countries, which represent a major part of the world and possess great potentials of economic growth and global sustainability.

The Head of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs attracted attention of the participants to digital technologies, which represent an emerging potential for the implementation of the SDGs. V.Makei informed about the national endeavours in turning Belarus into an “IT-country” and proposed that the United Nations should engage in international cooperation on digitalization and technological foresight in ways that facilitate sustainable development.

The Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also attracted attention to the need to collectively react to the global threat of terrorism. In this context he informed about convening a High-level international conference on preventing terrorism in the digital age, organized by Belarus and the OSCE on October 9-10 in Minsk.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed that global order should be forged on the basis of “shared values”, which cannot be created by means of coercive “democratization” and violence that are invoked for the purpose of undermining legitimate authorities.

V.Makei stated that stability based on the role of the states in international affairs, respect for the national sovereignty, strengthening the state and its role in domestic affairs, as well as unity among great powers in relation to “shared values” and their leadership in advancing them should become the paradigm for such values.

In this context the Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attracted attention of participants in the General Debate to the initiate of President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko on the need of starting comprehensive international security dialogue which will help to resolve  deep crisis of trust in international relations and produce mechanisms aimed at strengthening  peace and international security, as well as ensuring sustainable development.
