Marianna Shchotkina meets with the UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed
18.07.2017On July 18, at the UN Headquarters in New York, Marianna Shchotkina, Deputy Chair of the Council of Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, National Coordinator for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, met with Amina Mohammed, the UN Deputy Secretary-General.
The meeting was held on the margins of the Ministerial Segment of the High-level Political Forum on sustainable development under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council, during which Belarus presents a national report on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The National Coordinator for Achieving the SDGs informed the interlocutor on the efforts of Belarus in the field of sustainable development and steps taken in order to establish systematic work in this direction.
The interlocutors discussed the issue of repositioning of the UN development system conducted in connection with the need for the UN agencies to adapt their activities to achieve the SDGs. M. Shchotkina presented Belarus's vision of this issue, in particular, noted the need for a transparent process, taking into account the national interests and priorities of the recipient countries of international technical assistance.
The representative of Belarus informed the UN Deputy Secretary-General on the cooperation between Belarus and the UN country team and expressed confidence that this cooperation will continue to develop and will be a significant factor in supporting Belarus towards achieving the SDGs.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General commended the activities of Belarus in achieving the SDGs and assured that the UN will actively support this process.
M. Shchotkina expressed hope that A. Mohamed will visit Minsk to take part in the events on the implementation of the new Agenda, which will be held with the participation of a wide range of national and international partners.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General accepted the invitation to visit Belarus, expressing interest in familiarizing with the efforts of the country in achieving the SDGs.
