01.06.2017

An annual session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Development Program, United Nations Population Fund and the UN Office for Project Services (UNDP / UNFPA / UNOPS) began its work at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Irina Velichko took part in the discussion of the draft UNDP strategic plan for 2018-2021 on behalf of the Belarusian delegation.

Reference: Belarus and other members of the UNDP / UNFPA / UNOPS Executive Board will adopt a new UNDP strategic plan for 2018-2021 at the end of 2017. The plan will define specific areas of work of UNDP for the next four years for responding to the most urgent problems for sustainable development in the world.

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Belarus positively noted in her statement (text in Russian, video) the reflection in the plan of a central role of UNDP in the UN development system, as well as emphasized the commitment of Belarus to preserve the leading role of UNDP in the UN system of operational agencies.

As Velichko noted, the strategic plan should take into account the needs of all recipient countries of international assistance, including middle-income countries. Deputy Head of the Belarusian mission noted that this category of countries should not be considered as competitors for other categories of countries, but as a critical subject of global sustainable development.

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Belarus drew attention to the particular role of donor countries in the draft strategic plan and the necessity to ensure a balance of interests between donor countries and recipient countries of international aid.

Velichko proposed to inscribe in the strategic plan issues of economic growth, environmental sustainability, as well as preventing and responding to various crises, including man-made disasters as one of the priorities of UNDP.
