M. Shchotkina met with UNDP Administrator A. Steiner

Marianna Shchotkina, Deputy Chair of the Council of the Republic of Belarus, National Coordinator on implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, met with the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Achim Steiner at the UNDP Headquarters in New York.

Reference: UNDP Administrator A. Steiner was appointed by the Secretary General of the United Nations this year in April and began to perform his duties from July, 13. A. Steiner replaced in this post H. Clark.

M.Shchotkina congratulated A. Steiner on the appointment and expressed hope that UNDP will continue to maintain its central role in the UN development system.

The head of the Belarusian delegation at the High-level Political Forum ECOSOC thanked UNDP for assisting Belarus in overcoming the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, as well as for joint projects in the fields of economy and ecology, effective management and support of population groups requiring assistance.

M.Shchotkina expressed her hope that UNDP will continue to play a leading role in the activities of the UN development system in overcoming the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster.

Reference: the coordination functions of the United Nations system related to the Chernobyl disaster belong to UNDP since 2004. The previous administrator of UNDP H. Clark chaired the inter-agency group on Chernobyl.

The Deputy Chair of the Council of the Republic of Belarus thanked UNDP for preparing the draft strategic plan for 2018-2021 and expressed confidence that it would be properly aligned with national priorities and needs of countries-recipients of international assistance.

Reference: Belarus and other members of the UNDP / UNFPA / UNOPS Executive Board will adopt the UNDP strategic plan for 2018-2021 in November 2017. The plan will define specific areas of work of UNDP for the next four years for responding to the most urgent problems for sustainable development in the world.

M. Shchotkina noted the high professionalism and initiativity of the UNDP country team in Belarus, headed by the UN Resident Coordinator / UNDP Sanaka Samarasinha.

The Deputy Chair of the Council of the Republic of Belarus thanked UNDP and the Resident Coordinator of the UN / UNDP for the initiative to implement the project on technical assistance in strengthening the capacity of the national coordinator and involving the country's parliament in the work to achieve sustainable development goals.
