Delegation of Belarus participates in the First Committee of the UN General Assembly

The First Committee of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly dealing with disarmament and international security has completed its work at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The Head of the International Security and Arms Control Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Aliaksandr Chasnouski participated in the Committee’s work.

Belarusian delegation took part in preparation and adoption of a number of the resolution of the First Committee that aim at supporting collective UN efforts in the field of nuclear disarmament, fight against the illicit proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and other armaments.

As chair of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, Belarus organised a series of expert consultations of the CSTO countries to discuss approaches to the work and decisions of the First Committee. In addition, Belarus initiated consultations of UN member states on the draft General Assembly resolution on cooperation between UN and CSTO.

Belarus delivered in the UN GA First Committee statements on behalf of the CSTO member states on countering the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (in Russian) and on fight against the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons (in Russian). Both documents have been developed on the initiative of the Belarusian side.
