Belarus hold a thematic meeting on countering terrorism

In New York on June 27, on the sidelines of the Conference of Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies of the UN Member to be held on 28-29 June States the Permanent Mission of Belarus together with Missions of in Bahrain, Egypt, Estonia, Kenya, Mexico, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, UAE, as well as UN Offices of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and UN Counter-Terrorism Committee conducted an event entitled “International cooperation to combat the use of the Internet for terrorist purposes: opportunities and challenges”.

The event was attended by Vladimir Voronkov, Under-Secretary-General on Counter-Terrorism, Yuri Fedotov, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Michèle Coninsx, as well as heads and experts from Permanent Missions of UN Member States.

During the panel discussions of the event, representatives of civil society, private sector, including major Internet resources “Twitter” and “Facebook”, made their statements.

Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Valentin Rybakov moderated the panel discussion on international cooperation and information sharing to combat the use of the Internet for terrorist purposes.

In his opening remarks, the head of Belarusian Mission focused on high demand to strengthen international cooperation in the use of information and communication technologies to combat terrorism, including the necessity of resolving the ussies of countering the use by terrorists of the so-called “Dark Web”, as well as of exploring possible negative effects of emerging technology of artificial intelligence.

Belarus’ participation in the event serves as logical continuation of its consistent efforts in the international process to strengthen international cooperation in fight against terrorism, as well as to promote the principles of peaceful settlement of disputes and stability in the region and in the world.
