On the side event at the UN Headquarters, dedicated to the topic of autism

A thematic event «Ensuring inclusion of persons with disabilities in a changing world: the role of sports and culture», dedicated to the topic of autism, was held at the UN Headquarters in New York on the margins of the 12th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities (11-13 June 2019) on the initiative of Belarus, Dominican Republic, Italy, Qatar, Slovakia, as well as a number of international NGOs.

During the event, examples of government policy strategies in the spheres of sports and culture, aimed at ensuring the full and comprehensive participation of people with autism in the society, as well as examples of cooperation between governments and civil society on this topic were reviewed.

In particular, the experience of the international charity public organisation «Children. Autism. Parents» (Belarus) and the Association of inclusive sports «Project Filipidde» (Italy) was presented to the participants.

In his statement, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations Valentin Rybakov noted that the state policy of Belarus in the field of protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, including persons with autism, is aimed at building an inclusive society.

The Belarusian diplomat drew the attention of the participants of the event to the project «Sport Inclusion», which is implemented jointly by the organisations «Children. Autism. Parents» and «Aleksandra Gerasimenya's Swimming Club», which is focused on creating an inclusive swimming courses for children with autism in Belarus. The Belarusian diplomat also invited interested foreign partners to participate in the project to share experience in this area.
