29.08.2017

Belarus participates in the second regular session of the UN Women Executive Board which is being held on August 29-30 at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Chargé d'Affaires of Belarus to the United Nations Irina Velichko informed the participants of the meeting about presenting by Belarus a Voluntary National Review on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the High-Level Political Forum on sustainable development earlier in July this year. Irina Velichko emphasized that the report also focused on the gender equality issues.

In her statement (text in Russian) the Belarusian diplomat has made a number of proposals to a new UN Women Strategic Plan 2018-2021. In particular, in order to increase an economic role of women I.Velichko offered to promote women's involvement in entrepreneurship as one of the most effective ways to improve women's access to decent work and to decrease the income gap between men and women.

At the end of this session the UN Women Executive Board, to which Belarus was elected for 2017-2019, will endorse a UN Women Strategic Plan 2018-2021. The plan provides specific directions for UN Women for the next four years to achieve gender equality and to protect the rights of women and girls.

The Belarusian diplomat noted that the UN Women should take a more visible role at the country level not only in the countries-recipients, but also in countries that achieved significant results in gender promoting in order to exchange successful experience for its further implementation in other countries.

Irina Velichko also called for active participation of UN Women high ranking representatives in national initiatives and attracted the attention of the international community to the regional conference on SDGs with the participation of national coordinators to be held in Belarus in 2018.
