On September 20, 2017 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Vladimir Makei hosted under the presidency of the Republic of Belarus a working meeting of the foreign ministers of the Collective Security Treaty Organization Member States on the margins of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly. The Secretary General of the CSTO Yuri Khachaturov took part in the meeting.

CSTO is a regional international organization established in 2002 and now comprises Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan. The main objective of the organization is to strengthen close and comprehensive relations in the foreign policy, military, military-technical spheres, coordination and joint efforts in combating international terrorism and other security threats.

The ministers of foreign affairs discussed the coordination of issues on the international agenda including those considered during the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly. As an outcome of the meeting the ministers signed three joint statements: “On fight against international terrorism”, “On ensuring comprehensive stability in the world”, “On the situation in Afghanistan and the threat of strengthening the positions of international terrorist and extremist organizations in the northern provinces of the country”.

Vladimir made a statement at ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement held in the UN Headquarters.

The meeting’s topic was dedicated to the policy of unilateral coercive measures and the ways how to challenge it.

The Non-Aligned Movement is an international political union joining 120 member-states which stands for the principles of non-participation in military alliances and promotes joint efforts against unilateral approaches and actions towards developing states on the global stage.

During the meeting the Foreign Minister presented the position of the Republic of Belarus  on unacceptability of the unilateral coercive measures policy contrary to the norms and principle of the International law.

As an outcome of the meeting, the ministers adopted a Joint Statement.

Within the events of the high-level segment of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly Vladimir Makei also took part in the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) Conference.

The Treaty was adopted in 1996 in order to ban all nuclear tests and explosions. It sets provisions for an international organization with its headquarters in Vienna to monitor compliance with the Treaty on the basis of international monitoring system and verification regime. To date, the Treaty has not entered into force. Of the 44 countries whose ratification of the CTBT is needed for its entry into force, India, Pakistan and DPRK have not signed the agreement. Five countries (China, Egypt, Israel, Iran, and the United States) signed but not ratified it.

During the Conference the Belarusian Minister expressed his full support for international efforts to ban nuclear testing and achieve nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.

As an outcome of the Conference, the participants adopted a Final Declaration promoting further international efforts to achieve early entry into force of the CTBT.
