On the meetings of the Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Dapkiunas with the UN Secretary General and the President of the UN General Assembly

On February 12, as part of an ongoing visit to the UN headquarters in New York, Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Dapkiunas met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

The key topic for conversation was the preparations for the official events dedicated to the UN 75th anniversary.

Andrei Dapkiunas stressed the need to give a substantive character to the anniversary UN Summit and related commemorative events. It was emphasized that the Republic of Belarus, as one of the UN founding countries, is ready to contribute to the promotion of significant historical dates.

The sides discussed the 75th Anniversary of the end of World War II as an important element in a series of commemorative events at the UN. This significant date should be reflected in a separate memorial event with the participation of all UN Member States without exception in a friendly, honest and as open as possible atmosphere in order to illustrate the historical role and responsibility of the UN and the founding countries in maintaining peace and preventing new conflicts.

Belarus’ approach to organizing the upcoming events at the UN by giving them special meaning were also discussed during the meeting of Andrei Dapkiunas with President of the UN General Assembly Tijani Muhammad-Bande. The President of the UN General Assembly confirmed his readiness to support and further cooperate with the Republic of Belarus in compiling the UN Anniversary agenda.

Andrei Dapkiunas also took part in a Side Event organized at the initiative of the Republic of Belarus at the UN headquarters on the topic “The Power of Artificial Intelligence: Threat or Leverage for international peace and security?”.

Representatives of the diplomatic corps, UN Secretariat, expert community and non-governmental organizations exchanged views on the ways to overcome current challenges and threats to international peace and security by means of new and emerging technologies.

Andrei Dapkiunas made a statement in which he emphasized the contribution of the Republic of Belarus to international efforts aimed at advancing information technologies, especially in the context of the fight against terrorism. The attention was also drawn to the results of the High Level International Counter-Terrorism Conference held in Minsk in September 2019.
