Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Valentin Rybakov meets Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Valentin Rybakov during his visit to New York conducted a meeting with Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova on her initiative.

 

The interlocutors discussed the status of the campaign in the UN on selection of the candidate for the post of the next UN Secretary-General.

Currently twelve candidates applied for this post. The UN General Assembly will appoint the next UN Secretary-General in the fall of 2016, instead of acting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon whose term of office terminate on December 31, this year. I. Bokova is one of candidates for the post of the UN head from the Eastern European States.

The day before the Belarusian diplomat took part in the public event, in which I. Bokova participated too, with candidates for the post of the UN Secretary-General, for the states and civil society on the initiative of the President of the 70th session of the UN General Assembly M. Lykketoft. During the discussion candidates provided their vision pertaining to promotion of the human rights issues to the UN agenda.

This event of such level and scale pertaining to UN campaign on the selection of the candidates for a post of the UN Secretary-General, which was also broadcasted by Al Jazeera, was held for the first time in the UN. Earlier, in April of this year the President of the 70th session if the UN General Assembly also convened a series of public interviews for the states with candidates for the post of the next UN Secretary-General. Such initiative regarding convening of public events in order to increase the UN role in the process of selection of the candidates for the post of the Head of the United Nations, belonged to Belarus, which was future actively supported by the Member States.
