14.02.2020

On February 13 Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Dapkiunas took part in the first meeting of the UN General Assembly this year in the format of Intergovernmental Negotiations on the UN Security Council reform.

The negotiation process on the reform of the UN Security Council was established by the decision of the UN General Assembly 62/557 of September 15, 2008 and consists in informal annual meetings of the UN General Assembly, where the Member States discuss the ways to reform the Council in such areas as the number of members, categories of membership, veto power, equitable regional representation, etc.

Andrei Dapkiunas made a statement reflecting the approaches of the Republic of Belarus towards the reform of the UN Security Council and emphasized that the negotiation process should be built upon the principles of consensus, equality and non-discrimination.

The Deputy Minister noted that only a step-by-step and mutually respectful dialogue is able to bring the parties closer to unanimity with regard to the reform, which is extremely important for maintenance of international peace and security.
