Delegation of Belarus participates in the work of the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations

The Belarusian delegation takes part in the work of the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the strengthening of the role of the Organization, which is to be held from February 21 to March 1.

During the first meeting of the Committee Tamara Kharashun, Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of Belarus, made a statement (in Russian) in which she expressed the support by Belarus of the work of the Committee and noted its important role in the reform of the UN Charter and of the Organisation.

At the same time the Belarusian delegate noted that the work of the Committee has low productivity and needs to be revitalised.

Among the priorities in the work of the delegation of Belarus at the current session the Belarusian delegate mentioned the promotion of the joint initiative of Belarus and the Russian Federation regarding the request of advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on the legal consequences of the use of force without prior authorisation by the Security Council, except in the case of the right to self-defense; work on the document on the basic conditions and standard criteria for the introduction and implementation of sanctions; consideration of strengthening and enhancing the effectiveness of the UN; development of a document on the strengthening of relations and cooperation between the UN and regional organisations or arrangements in the peaceful settlement of disputes.
