Belarus holds a thematic discussion at the UN Security Council 1540 Committee

At the initiative of the Republic of Belarus a meeting of a subsidiary body of the UN Security Council – Committee established pursuant to resolution 1540 (2004) on non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (1540 Committee) – was held in New York.

The meeting of the Committee was the first thematic event for the countries from the region of Eastern Europe and Central Asia that was ever held in the UN Security Council.

A report on the results of regional cooperation between Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan through the Trilateral Peer Reviews was presented by Nikolay Ovsyanko, head of the division for international security and arms control of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus.

The UN Security Council Committee commended the efforts of the Republic of Belarus to facilitate the transfer of experience to the countries of the region on the implementation of resolution 1540 (2004) and the enhancement of international cooperation to combat the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
