Representative of Belarus elected to the bureau of the UNICEF Executive Board
11.01.2017On the eve of the first session of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) to be held on February 7 -9, 2017 at the UN headquarters in New York, Belarus became a member of the governing body of the UNICEF Executive Board in 2017. Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the UN Irina Velichko was unanimously elected as one of the vice-presidents to the Bureau of the UNICEF Executive Board.
Bureau of the UNICEF Executive Board consists of a President and four Vice-Presidents. These five officers represent five UN regional groups and are elected annually by the UNICEF Executive Board. The Bureau serves as a bridge between the UNICEF secretariat and the countries represented on the Executive Board. The Bureau contributes to prompt solution of administrative and functional matters, facilitates the negotiation of the Executive Board’s decisions and promotes its efficiency.
Apart from Belarus, the Executive Board also elected Antigua and Barbuda (Chairman of the Executive Board), Burkina Faso, Norway and Saudi Arabia to the Bureau.
During its first session in February the UNICEF Executive Board will consider a road map and outlines of the UNICEF Strategic Plan for the next four years, the results of the joint work of UNICEF and other UN funds on preventing HIV/AIDS spreading, as well as will adopt the Fund’s country programs in South Africa and Latin America.
