Round Table Discussion on Chernobyl takes place at the United Nations

On June 26, 2019, thematic discussion “Invaluable Lessons Learned from the Chernobyl Disaster and Other World Tragedies” took place at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The roundtable event was organised jointly by the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the United Nations, the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan to the United Nations and American non-governmental organisations “Project Chernobyl” and “Russian American Foundation”.

Its main purpose was to draw attention to the Chernobyl-related issues in order to intensify international cooperation in this area before presenting a draft resolution on the legacy of the Chernobyl disaster during the 74th session of the UN General Assembly.

In his statement, Valentin Rybakov, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN noted the need to ensure sustainable development in the affected regions and presented proposals by Belarus on further international cooperation on Chernobyl under the UN auspices.

Mirjana Spoljaric-Egger, Assistant Administrator of the UN Development Programme, Regional Director for Europe and CIS presented main achievements of United Nations international Chernobyl cooperation on Chernobyl for recovery and sustainable development of the affected regions, as well as its prospects.

Much attention was attracted by the presentation of Igor Branovan, Head of the “Chernobyl Project”, on the results of medical research on innovative treatment methods of radiation-induced diseases.

During the event, the works of Philip Grossman, American photographer, who had visited the exclusion zone around the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, including the State Radiation and Ecology Reserve “Polessie”, were displayed. Organ symphony Chernobyl by Mikael Tariverdiev was also presented.
