V. Rybakov participates in the debate on the UN GA revitalisation

20.02.2018

At the UN Headquarters in New York on February 20 the Ad Hoc Working Group on the revitalisation of the UN General Assembly began its annual session.

The Ad Hoc Working Group on the revitalisation of the UN General Assembly was established more than 10 years ago. At its 62th session the UN General Assembly annualised its work. During the current session, the Working Group will consider improving the role and authority of the General Assembly, its working methods, selection and appointment of the executive heads within the United Nations system, the establishment of appropriate working conditions of the Office of the President of the General Assembly and other aspects of its own activities. The Belarusian delegation is traditionally one of the most active participants in the process of revitalising the activities of the UN General Assembly.

Valentin Rybakov, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN made a statement (in Russian) at the opening session of the Working Group.

The head of the Belarusian Mission to the United Nations emphasised the need for an early start of the thematic rounds of dialogue between Member States’ Missions to the United Nations and the UN Secretariat on ways to improve its work and cooperation with the Diplomatic Missions to the United Nations. The idea which Belarus was promoting through the Non-Aligned Movement during the last two years will allow to solve the emerging issues and increase the effectiveness of cooperation in the UN.

According to the Belarusian diplomat, other problematic issues to which the Working Group should pay its attention at the current session of the UN General Assembly, are overburdening the Member States by UN Secretariat reports, the low level of representation of the Members in the Main Committees of the UN General Assembly and the need to finalise a new version of the “Journal of the United Nations”.
