Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs takes part in the UN events

During the High-level Week of the UN General Assembly, that now takes place at the UN Headquarters in New York, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Andrei Dapkiunas made a statement at the ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement.

The meeting’s topic was dedicated to the issues of upholding the UN Charter and the purposes and principles of the Non-Aligned Movement.

The Non-Aligned Movement is an international political union joining 120 member-states which stands for the principles of non-participation in military alliances and promotes joint efforts against unilateral approaches and actions towards developing states on the global stage.

The Deputy Foreign Minister presented the position of the Republic of Belarus regarding the ways to overcome global crisis in conflict prevention and drew attention to the need to act together and on the basis of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter for achieving international peace and security.

As an outcome of the meeting the delegates adopted a Joint Political Declaration.

Andrei Dapkiunas also took part in the UNGA High-Level Plenary Meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day for Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

The General Assembly declared the International Day in December 2013 in its resolution 68/32 as a follow-up to the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on nuclear disarmament which was held on 26 September 2013, in New York.

Every year the UNGA holds a high-level meeting devoted to this day so that all states could reaffirm their commitment to the goals of building a nuclear weapons free world.

During the Meeting the Deputy Foreign Minister expressed his full support for international efforts in the field of non-proliferation and disarmament and called on all states to promote more actively purposes related to a comprehensive nuclear testing ban.

Documentary photo exhibition “Translators in Action: Promoting Peace” dedicated to the celebration of the International Translation Day in the United Nations was inaugurated on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the UN General Assembly.

Decision to establish the International Translation Day in the United Nations on September 30 was adopted by the UN General Assembly on May 24, 2017. on a joint Belarusian-Azerbaijani initiative.

The photo exhibition was opened by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Andrei Dapkiunas. Alexander Zouev, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions, leadership of the translation units of the UN Secretariat, as well as representatives of linguistic associations have also addressed the guests of the event with welcoming speeches.

Organised jointly by Belarus, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, the photo exhibition demonstrates the work of interpreters in peacekeeping and peacebuilding missions and comes as part of Belarus' efforts to promote the idea of strengthening the legal and physical protection of linguists working in high-risk settings.
