14.06.2017

The annual session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) started its work at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN and Vice-President of the Executive Board in 2017 Irina Velichko took part in the discussion of the draft UNICEF strategic plan for 2018-2021 on behalf of the Belarusian delegation.

Reference: It is anticipated that the Executive Board will adopt a new INICEF strategic plan for 2018-2021 in September, 2017. The plan will define specific areas of work of UNICEF for the next four years in the area of protection of the rights and interests of children.

In her statement (text in Russian), the Deputy Permanent Representative of Belarus supported the inclusion in the strategic plan the protection of the rights and interests of children with disabilities as one of the UNICEF activities.

The Belarusian representative positively assessed the inclusion in the plan of the problem of trafficking in persons as a condition necessary to create an enabling environment in order to reduce the vulnerability of children.

I. Velichko welcomed the reflection in the document of the need to work on the exclusion of duplication of UNICEF functions with the functions of other UN bodies.

The Deputy Permanent Representative noted the necessity to avoid expanding the mandate of the Fund by extending the scope of the plan to the protection of the rights and interests of young people and women, as well as the need of the systematic work of the Fund on the support of family and family values.

I. Velichko positively assessed the work of the UNICEF country office in Belarus and outlined plans for further active cooperation with it in order to ensure children's well-being.
