Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations addresses the annual session of the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board

08.06.2016

The delegation of Belarus headed by Andrei Dapkiunas, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN, takes part in the annual session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), which takes place this week at the UN headquarters in New York. The Head of the Belarusian delegation took part in the discussion of the Executive Board at the UNDP segment on June 8.

The Belarusian diplomat praised the UNDP results in gender equality promotion, but at the same time urged the UNDP to pay more attention to the protection and strengthening the family.

At the current session of the Executive Board the delegation of Belarus has traditionally raised problems of middle-income countries, which are home to a majority of the world's population. A. Dapkiunas invited UNDP to accede to the creation of a focal point for middle-income countries within the UN system. This structure would analyze the root causes of the instability of middle-income countries’ development, prepare recommendations for overcoming them and on risk management, as well as provide advisory and technical assistance to enhance the sustainable development of these countries.

For more balanced economic development and for overcoming a technology gap between developed and developing countries, the representative of Belarus also urged to seek more actively various forms of interaction between different economic unions in the world. One of such models is the “integration of integrations”, initiative of Belarus that was launched by the President of Belarus at the UN Summit in 2015.

In this case, Belarus has announced that the Government of Belarus and the UN Economic Commission for Europe would hold an international conference in Minsk in October. The conference will be devoted to the creation of a basis for deeper integration, economic development and the achievement of sustainable development goals in the region.
