Belarusian delegation takes part in the work of the UN GA Fourth Committee

The Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly (special political and decolonization issues) continues its work at the UN Headquarters in New York.

During the discussion on the agenda item «Effects of Atomic Radiation», representative of Belarusian delegation Tatyana Fedorovich expressed support to the Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) and noted the importance of continuing international cooperation in studying the effects of atomic radiation on human health and environment.

Belarus has been actively cooperating with UNSCEAR for several years, and, being its full-fledged member since 2011, presented to the Committee unique data collected in the regions affected by the Chernobyl accident. Belarus also has an opportunity to study the experience of other countries in overcoming the effects of atomic radiation.

The Belarusian diplomat noted the importance of continuing the work of the NSCAP on studying radiological consequences of nuclear accidents and welcomed the assessment of data on thyroid cancer in regions affected by the Chernobyl accident completed in 2017.
