26.04.2019

On April 26, 2019, a thematic event “Legacy of the Chernobyl Disaster: Still Topical” took place at the UN Headquarters in New York to commemorate the fInternational Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day.

The International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day was declared by the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly “Persistent Legacy of the Chernobyl Disaster”, initiated by Belarus and adopted in December 2016.

The event was organised by the Permanent Mission of Belarus together with the Permanent Missions of Ireland and Ukraine, the Irish non-governmental organisation “Chernobyl Children International” in collaboration with HBO. The aim of the event was to honour the victims of the disaster and to pay tribute to the assistance and sympathy, expressed to the people affected by this accident.

At the event, an excerpt from “Chernobyl” mini-series, produced by The Mighty Mint, Sister Pictures and Word Games for HBO and Sky, was shown, ahead of the debut on May 6, 2019.

Chernobyl, a five-part mini-series, dramatizes the story of the 1986 nuclear accident and its victims. Chernobyl stars Emmy-nominee Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård and Oscar-nominee Emily Watson.

In his speech, Permanent Representative of Belarus Valentin Rybakov expressed his gratitude to states, international organisations and charitable non-governmental organisations for assisting Belarus in overcoming the legacy of the disaster, implementing projects in the field of health and ecology, and contribution to recuperation and medical treatment of children from the Chernobyl-affected regions.

The Permanent Representative of Ireland read a message from the Irish Foreign Minister on the occasion of the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day.

Adi Roche, founder and Voluntary CEO of Chernobyl Children International, the Irish charitable organisation, drew attention to the global impact of the Chernobyl man-made disaster and spoke about her organisation’s social and humanitarian projects and medical programmes for children from the Chernobyl-affected regions.

The event was attended by heads and staff of the UN member states’ missions in New York, UN agencies and non-governmental organisations.
