Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations Valentin Rybakov participates in the meeting of the United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on Chernobyl

On April 16, 2019, at the UNDP Headquarters in New York, Valentin Rybakov, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations took part in the meeting of the United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Chernobyl.

IATF on Chernobyl coordinates activities of the United Nations agencies, other international organisations and interested countries related to international cooperation on Chernobyl. The Task Force is chaired by Achim Steiner, Administrator of the UN Development Programme. Its members are more than ten international organisations, including UNDP, IAEA, WHO, UNEP, FAO, World Bank. The three most Chernobyl-affected countries, Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, are permanent participants of IATF.

The event organized at the initiative of Belarus is aimed to review the implementation of the UN General Assembly resolution “Persistent legacy of the Chernobyl disaster”. The participants reviewed results of cooperation in this area over the past year, discussed proposals for organising further cooperation and possible elements of the new Chernobyl resolution, planning for the adoption during the next session of the UN General Assembly.

During the meeting, V. Rybakov informed about measures undertaken by the Belarusian side for the social and economic development of affected regions, noting the unique experience accumulated by Belarus in this field and the willingness to share it.

The Belarusian diplomat presented proposals of Belarus on advancing international cooperation on Chernobyl with the participation of the UN system and interested states and called upon WHO, FAO and UNICEF to engage more actively in project activities in this field.

The Permanent Representative also informed that Belarus is organising an event together with Ireland, Ukraine and the Irish charity organisation “Chernobyl Children International” at UN Headquarters on the occasion of the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day.
