Belarus participates at the first regular session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which was opened at the UN Headquarters in New York on February, 6, 2018 under the leadership of new Executive Director of UNICEF, Henrietta Fore.

H. Fore became the seventh executive director of UNICEF on 1 January 2018. From 2007 to 2009, she served as Administrator of the US Agency for International Development and Director of External Aid for the United States.

In his speech (statement in Russian, video in English), Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Valentin Rybakov noted the necessity to concentrate work on achieving concrete results. Positively noting the increase in donor assistance to UNICEF, the Permanent Representative expressed hope that this trend would continue to ensure sustainable progress in the area of child protection worldwide.

V. Rybakov supported the need to seek new partners for UNICEF not only to strengthen financial sustainability, but also to use new technologies to protect the rights and interests of children.

The Head of the Belarusian Mission also highly appreciated work of UNICEF representative, Mr. Rashed Mustafa Sarwar, and of UNICEF country team on supporting national efforts by the Fund in promoting interests of Belarusian children. In this context, V. Rybakov informed that Minsk had obtained status of a city friendly to children.

Belarus participates in UNICEF initiative “Cities Friendly to Children” since 2008. Since then, 25 Belarusian cities have joined the initiative. Last year the capital of Belarus, Minsk, was given status of a city friendly to children.

The session of the UNICEF Executive Board will last till February, 8, 2018.
