Belarusian diplomat elected as the Chair of the Special Committee on the UN Charter

The annual session of the Special Committee on the United Nations Charter and on the strengthening of the role of the organization began its work at the United Nations headquarters in New York on February 21.

For the position of the Chair of the Special Committee in 2017 for the first time was elected a Belarusian diplomat – Ruslan Varankov, Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the UN. Diplomats of Denmark, Malaysia, Sudan and Venezuela were appointed as Vice-Chairmen of the Committee.

Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations was established in 1974 for consideration of proposals to increase the UN's ability achieve its purposes and for more effective functioning of the Organisation. At present session, the Committee will consider supporting international peace and security in all aspects in order to strengthen the role of the United Nations, assistance to third States affected by the application of sanctions under Chapter VII of the Charter, peaceful settlement of disputes and other issues.

The election of the representative of Belarus to the position of head of the Special Committee reconfirms Belarus' credibility as an active and consistent supporter of international dialogue, improvement of work of the United Nations and of strengthening of the Organisation's role in international relations.
